Video Update: 10/18/2014

Still growing in population! :D

Here is an update video.

 

Here they are feeding- you can see them squirting formic acid onto the flies! :D

Yeah, sometimes when the colony is super hungry, even the queen will chase them. :P

I liked how the feeding video turned out; you can make out what looks like drops of formic acid on the end of the worker's gasters! :D

the acid doesent seem effective, or maybe there is an amount of time for it to take action.

Actually, towards the end of the video, you may notice that the fly is slowly becoming immobile, and a minute or so after I finished recording, it was paralyzed and being carried back to the larvae.

Not really an update, but here are some pictures of the workers trying to make a chamber out of their own brood! :lol: 

I couldn't get it in the picture, but it is hollow inside, so it is a little tube of brood. :D

This colony has been placed into a foraging container, and they have moved in nicely. :)

For the first time since I got them, one of the "infertile" queens have a swollen gaster. None of them have ever even laid an egg, so I do not know for sure that they are infertile, even though, that is the most likely thing now, who knows? :)

cerasi is impossible to distinguish from lineoleta without a microscope and experience.

Neither of those species are found here in California. There are TONS of Crematogaster species that look almost identical.

Well... As you may have been able to tell by previous images/video, the larvae of these colony never seem to have food in them. Is this normal, or are they actually hungry? I have now seen these guys finally accept a bit of Aqua 300, and only the liquid. I know Crematogaster love sweets, but what should the protein source be?!
